An oxazolidinone class antibiotic. It inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. Primarily reserved for serious Gram-positive infections, including resistant strains like MRSA and VRE.
Indications

Hospital-acquired pneumonia and community-acquired pneumonia.

Complicated and uncomplicated skin and soft tissue infections (including MRSA).

Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VRE) infections.
Side Effects

Myelosuppression (thrombocytopenia, anemia, leukopenia) – requires regular blood count monitoring.

Diarrhea, nausea, headache.

Peripheral and optic neuropathy (with prolonged use >28 days).

Serotonin syndrome (risk with concomitant serotonergic drugs).

Lactic acidosis.
